Direct answer: is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-in Milk Sunscreen SPF 60 right for you?

Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: SPF does not scale the way people read it: SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent of UVB and SPF 60 about 98, so doubling the number buys one percentage point. What genuinely determines protection is quantity, because the rating is measured at about a quarter teaspoon for a face and almost nobody applies that much. Note too that SPF rates UVB only -- UVA, which does most of the ageing, is covered by the PA rating that US labelling omits.
Who should buy this
Anyone who will apply a proper quarter teaspoon and reapply every two hours.
Who should avoid this
Anyone applying a thin layer once a day and expecting SPF 60 protection.
Key strengths
- Broad spectrum with avobenzone, so UVA is filtered even though not PA rated
- 80 minute water resistance, a tested rather than marketing claim
- Melts in without a white cast, which matters on Indian skin tones
Limitations
- Fragranced, unusual for a sensitive-skin brand
- SPF 60 offers about one percentage point more UVB protection than SPF 30
- No PA rating, so UVA protection is not quantified on the label
Technical specifications
- UVA
- SPF measures UVB only. UVA causes most ageing and tanning and is rated by the PA system, which US-labelled sunscreens do not carry

- What actually matters
- Quantity. SPF is measured at 2 mg per square centimetre, about a quarter teaspoon for a face, and almost nobody applies that much. Applying half gives far less than half the rated protection

Read the fit note, and it was me
The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Anyone who will apply a proper quarter teaspoon and reapply every two hours. On that basis it has been the right call. Broad spectrum with avobenzone, so UVA is filtered even though not PA rated.

Does the one thing I bought it for
Broad spectrum with avobenzone, so UVA is filtered even though not PA rated. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: 80 minute water resistance, a tested rather than marketing claim. Nothing has surprised me in three months.

My mistake, but read the avoid note
Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone applying a thin layer once a day and expecting SPF 60 protection. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Good, with one thing to plan for
Broad spectrum with avobenzone, so UVA is filtered even though not PA rated. The one thing to know before ordering: Fragranced, unusual for a sensitive-skin brand. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.
