Direct answer: is the HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Ink Tank Printer right for you?
Refillable tanks rather than cartridges is what changes the arithmetic: a bottle set covering roughly 6,000 black and 8,000 color pages costs about as much as one laser cartridge.

Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: Refillable tanks rather than cartridges is what changes the arithmetic: a bottle set covering roughly 6,000 black and 8,000 color pages costs about as much as one laser cartridge. Inkjet speed is the price paid -- 12 ppm in mono and 5 in color, and those are the draft figures rather than the ISO ones. Ink tank printers punish idleness: printheads dry if the machine sits unused for weeks, and unlike a cartridge the head is not replaced by buying a consumable.
Who should buy this
Home offices printing color regularly and wanting the lowest cost per color page.
Who should avoid this
Sites that print in bursts weeks apart, where a laser will not clog and this will.

Three stars, and here is exactly why
Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Printheads dry out if the machine sits idle for weeks. 12 ppm mono, and that is the draft figure. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: Well under a cent a mono page on bottled ink. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

After a few months
Had this six weeks now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Refill tanks are visible, so ink level is not a guess. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Printheads dry out if the machine sits idle for weeks. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

Matched my use exactly
The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Home offices printing color regularly and wanting the lowest cost per color page. On that basis it has been the right call. Well under a cent a mono page on bottled ink.
