Brother HL-L2460DW Compact Mono Laser Printer

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: Brother does not lock its cartridges by firmware, which is the practical difference from the HP equivalents -- compatible TN760 toner is widely available and the printer will use it. It is a printer only: no scanner, no copier, no feeder. That is the reason it costs a third of the multi-function machines beside it. The drum is separate at about 15,000 pages, so the true running cost is toner plus a periodic drum, not toner alone.

Who should buy this

Desks that need fast reliable mono printing and nothing else.

Who should avoid this

Anyone who needs to scan or copy, which this cannot do at all.

Key strengths

  • No cartridge firmware lock, so compatibles work
  • Automatic duplex at 36 ppm
  • Separate drum, replaced far less often than toner

Limitations

  • Print only -- no scanning or copying
  • The drum is a second consumable most buyers do not budget for
  • Mono only

Be ready for one thing — Print only

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Print only — no scanning or copying. The drum is a second consumable most buyers do not budget for. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: No cartridge firmware lock, so compatibles work. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

    After a few months

Had this a full season now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Automatic duplex at 36 ppm. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Print only — no scanning or copying. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

Right product for the right person

The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Desks that need fast reliable mono printing and nothing else. On that basis it has been the right call. No cartridge firmware lock, so compatibles work.

    Wrong product for my situation

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone who needs to scan or copy, which this cannot do at all. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Good, with one thing to plan for

No cartridge firmware lock, so compatibles work. The one thing to know before ordering: Print only — no scanning or copying. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.
