Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: About 3,000 pages at ISO/IEC 19752, which is a defined 5 per cent coverage test -- ordinary office documents run closer to 6 or 7 per cent, so real yield is usually below the number on the box. At about $110 the stated yield works out near 3.7 cents a page, and the 58X high-yield version at about 10,000 pages brings the same printer under 2 cents. It carries no drum: the M404 and M428 families use a separate imaging drum, so this cartridge is toner only and the drum is a second consumable to budget for.

Who should buy this

Sites running LaserJet Pro M404 or M428 machines that want the yield the printer was rated with.

Who should avoid this

Higher-volume offices, who should be buying the 58X high-yield cartridge instead.

Key strengths

  • Rated 3,000 pages under the ISO/IEC 19752 test
  • Original cartridge, so no firmware rejection
  • Toner only, so the drum is not discarded with it

Limitations

  • The 3,000 page figure assumes 5 per cent coverage, below typical office use
  • The 58X cartridge is substantially cheaper per page
  • The imaging drum is a separate consumable

Posting after real use, not unboxing

Had this two months now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Original cartridge, so no firmware rejection. Still mildly irritated by one thing: The 3,000 page figure assumes 5 per cent coverage, below typical office use. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

Worth it for one thing — Rated 3

Rated 3,000 pages under the ISO/IEC 19752 test. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Original cartridge, so no firmware rejection. No regrets after two months.

Right product for the right person

The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Sites running LaserJet Pro M404 or M428 machines that want the yield the printer was rated with. On that basis it has been the right call. Rated 3,000 pages under the ISO/IEC 19752 test.

Three stars, and here is exactly why

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: The 3,000 page figure assumes 5 per cent coverage, below typical office use. The 58X cartridge is substantially cheaper per page. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: Rated 3,000 pages under the ISO/IEC 19752 test. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

Not the product’s fault, but be warned

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Higher-volume offices, who should be buying the 58X high-yield cartridge instead. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.
