Color laser MFP. Print speed: Up to 35 ppm mono and color, Letter.

Direct answer: is the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw Color Laser Printer right for you?

Color laser means four cartridges to replace instead of one, and a full set of high-yield 214X costs more than half the printer -- that is the trade being made, not print quality.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: Color laser means four cartridges to replace instead of one, and a full set of high-yield 214X costs more than half the printer -- that is the trade being made, not print quality. Print speed is the same 35 ppm in color as in mono, which is unusual at this price and is the specification that separates this from the entry-level color lasers. Dynamic Security applies here too, so the cheaper compatible cartridges that make color laser affordable are not an option.

Who should buy this

Offices printing color in volume that need laser output rather than inkjet.

Who should avoid this

Anyone printing occasional color, for whom an ink tank machine costs far less to own.

    No notes

Same 35 ppm in color as in mono. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Automatic duplex and a 50-sheet reversing feeder. Nothing has surprised me in most of a year.

Read the fit note, and it was me

The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Offices printing color in volume that need laser output rather than inkjet. On that basis it has been the right call. Same 35 ppm in color as in mono.

    Wrong product for my situation

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone printing occasional color, for whom an ink tank machine costs far less to own. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Four stars, and here is the fifth — Four cartridges to replace

Same 35 ppm in color as in mono. The one thing to know before ordering: Four cartridges to replace, and Dynamic Security blocks compatibles. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.
