Direct answer: is the SwissGear 1900 Scansmart TSA Laptop Backpack right for you?

The ScanSmart lay-flat compartment is built around a US TSA procedure where the laptop stays in the bag through the scanner, and Indian airport security generally still asks for laptops out -- so the headline feature does not help on domestic flights.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: The ScanSmart lay-flat compartment is built around a US TSA procedure where the laptop stays in the bag through the scanner, and Indian airport security generally still asks for laptops out -- so the headline feature does not help on domestic flights. As a well-built 34 litre laptop backpack it is fine. There is no hip belt, so keep the load under about 8 kg.

Who should avoid this

Anyone buying specifically for the TSA feature on Indian domestic flights.

    No notes

Takes up to a 17 inch laptop, which most backpacks do not. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Ballistic polyester genuinely resists abrasion. Been using it now for a full season.

Happy with it, but go in informed

Takes up to a 17 inch laptop, which most backpacks do not. The one thing to know before ordering: The ScanSmart feature does not apply at Indian airport security. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

    Wrong product for my situation

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone buying specifically for the TSA feature on Indian domestic flights. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Bought it on the numbers, and the numbers were right

I compared four of these on paper before ordering, so the line I actually checked was "Where it applies". The page says This is a US TSA procedure. Indian airport security generally still requires laptops out of bags, so the feature does not help on domestic flights, and that is what turned up. Takes up to a 17 inch laptop, which most backpacks do not.
