Handheld thermal label maker. Uses TZe laminated tape. Tape is the real cost of ownership, not the machine

Direct answer: is the Brother P-touch PTH110 Easy Portable Label Maker right for you?

Laminated TZe tape is why Brother labels survive on a freezer or outdoors where unlaminated ones rub off -- the printed layer is sandwiched between two films rather than sitting on the surface.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: Laminated TZe tape is why Brother labels survive on a freezer or outdoors where unlaminated ones rub off -- the printed layer is sandwiched between two films rather than sitting on the surface. It is also where the money goes: cassettes cost Rs700 to 1000 for eight metres, and over a few years the tape costs more than the machine did.

Who should buy this

Anyone labelling things that get handled, wet or sunlit, where unlaminated tape fails.

Who should avoid this

Anyone making a handful of labels -- the tape economics do not justify the machine.

Key strengths

  • Laminated tape survives water, abrasion and sunlight
  • QWERTY keyboard rather than alphabetical, which is far faster
  • Widths from 3.5 to 12 mm from one machine

Limitations

  • Tape at Rs700 to 1000 per cassette dominates the cost of ownership
  • Wastes about 25 mm of leader tape on every print
  • 6 AAA batteries, with no adapter included

Does the one thing I bought it for

Laminated tape survives water, abrasion and sunlight. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: QWERTY keyboard rather than alphabetical, which is far faster. Been using it now for a couple of weeks.

Happy with it, but go in informed

Laminated tape survives water, abrasion and sunlight. The one thing to know before ordering: Tape at Rs700 to 1000 per cassette dominates the cost of ownership. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

My mistake, but read the avoid note

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone making a handful of labels — the tape economics do not justify the machine. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Bought it on the numbers, and the numbers were right

I compared four of these on paper before ordering, so the line I actually checked was "Weight". The page says 400 g without batteries, and that is what turned up. Laminated tape survives water, abrasion and sunlight.
