Network firewall appliance. Firewall throughput: 5 Gbps with inspection disabled.

Direct answer: is the Fortinet FortiGate 40F Next-Generation Firewall right for you?

The 5 Gbps firewall figure and the 900 Mbps threat protection figure are the same appliance measured with inspection off and on -- the second number is what a site with security profiles enabled will actually see.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: The 5 Gbps firewall figure and the 900 Mbps threat protection figure are the same appliance measured with inspection off and on -- the second number is what a site with security profiles enabled will actually see. The hardware is close to useless without a FortiGuard subscription, and that subscription is an annual cost roughly comparable to the appliance itself over three years. Fanless and desktop sized, which suits a branch office; the trade-off is five gigabit ports and no expansion.

Who should buy this

Branch offices needing SD-WAN, IPS and web filtering under central FortiManager control.

Who should avoid this

Anyone budgeting for the appliance alone -- the subscription is the larger recurring cost.

Key strengths

  • Fanless and silent, suitable for an occupied office
  • SD-WAN and IPsec VPN included in the base firmware
  • Managed centrally alongside other FortiGate units

Limitations

  • Threat protection throughput is about 900 Mbps, not the 5 Gbps headline
  • FortiGuard subscription is effectively mandatory and recurs annually
  • Five gigabit ports with no expansion slot

Does the one thing I bought it for

Fanless and silent, suitable for an occupied office. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: SD-WAN and IPsec VPN included in the base firmware. Nothing has surprised me in a full season.

Happy with it, but go in informed

Fanless and silent, suitable for an occupied office. The one thing to know before ordering: Threat protection throughput is about 900 Mbps, not the 5 Gbps headline. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

    Wrong product for my situation

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone budgeting for the appliance alone — the subscription is the larger recurring cost. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.
