Managed switch. Port count: 24 x Gigabit Ethernet plus 4 x SFP.

Direct answer: is the Cisco Catalyst 1200-24T-4G 24-Port Gigabit Managed Switch right for you?

The 24T in the model number means twenty-four data ports and no PoE at all -- the PoE variants are the 24P and 24FP, and buying this one for access points is the common and expensive mistake.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: The 24T in the model number means twenty-four data ports and no PoE at all -- the PoE variants are the 24P and 24FP, and buying this one for access points is the common and expensive mistake. Four SFP uplinks make it a sensible aggregation switch, which is the role it fits better than as an access switch. Cisco Business Dashboard management is included without a per-device license, which is not true further up the Catalyst range.

Who should buy this

Sites aggregating several access switches over fiber and wanting Cisco management without licensing.

Who should avoid this

Anyone powering access points or cameras, who needs a 24P or 24FP instead.

Key strengths

  • Four SFP uplinks for fiber aggregation

Read the fit note, and it was me

The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Sites aggregating several access switches over fiber and wanting Cisco management without licensing. On that basis it has been the right call. Four SFP uplinks for fiber aggregation.

Fine, once I adjusted my expectations

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: No PoE on any port — this is the 24T variant. Fan cooled, so it is audible outside a cabinet. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: Four SFP uplinks for fiber aggregation. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

Posting after real use, not unboxing

Had this a full season now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Static routing, VLANs and full port statistics. Still mildly irritated by one thing: No PoE on any port — this is the 24T variant. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

    No notes

Four SFP uplinks for fiber aggregation. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Static routing, VLANs and full port statistics. No regrets after a couple of weeks.
