Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: The number that justifies induction over gas is efficiency: about 85 percent of the electricity reaches the pan, against roughly 40 percent of an LPG flame, most of which heats the kitchen. The catch nobody mentions at purchase is the pan: induction requires a ferromagnetic base, and a good deal of Indian cookware -- aluminium kadhai, some stainless steel -- will simply not heat on it.

Who should buy this

Anyone cooking indoors who wants faster, cooler, controllable heat than LPG.

Who should avoid this

Anyone unwilling to replace aluminium cookware -- a magnet must stick to the pan for it to work at all.

Key strengths

  • About 85 percent efficient against roughly 40 percent for an LPG flame
  • Heats and responds far faster than gas, and stops instantly
  • Flat ceramic glass wipes clean, with no burner to scrub

Limitations

  • Only works with ferromagnetic pans -- much Indian cookware will not
  • Useless during a power cut, where gas is not
  • Internal cooling fan runs on after cooking

  • 4 out of 5 stars, in a sample review of Philips Viva Collection 2100W Induction Cooktop (HD4928/01)

    After a few months

Had this two months now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Heats and responds far faster than gas, and stops instantly. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Only works with ferromagnetic pans — much Indian cookware will not. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

  • 2 out of 5 stars, in a sample review of Philips Viva Collection 2100W Induction Cooktop (HD4928/01)

    Wrong product for my situation

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone unwilling to replace aluminium cookware — a magnet must stick to the pan for it to work at all. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

  • 5 out of 5 stars, in a sample review of Philips Viva Collection 2100W Induction Cooktop (HD4928/01)

    Specs match the listing

I compared four of these on paper before ordering, so the line I actually checked was "Efficiency". The page says About 85 percent of energy reaches the pan, against roughly 40 percent for LPG, and that is what turned up. Heats and responds far faster than gas, and stops instantly.

  • 4 out of 5 stars, in a sample review of Philips Viva Collection 2100W Induction Cooktop (HD4928/01)

Happy with it, but go in informed

About 85 percent efficient against roughly 40 percent for an LPG flame. The one thing to know before ordering: Only works with ferromagnetic pans — much Indian cookware will not. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

  • 3 out of 5 stars, in a sample review of Philips Viva Collection 2100W Induction Cooktop (HD4928/01)

Three stars, and here is exactly why

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Only works with ferromagnetic pans — much Indian cookware will not. Useless during a power cut, where gas is not. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: About 85 percent efficient against roughly 40 percent for an LPG flame. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.
