Direct answer: is the APC Back-UPS Pro 1500VA Battery Backup and Surge Protector right for you?

A consumer-grade sibling of the Smart-UPS at a third of the price, and the difference is where it matters: 900 W against 1000 W, and a much shorter warranty on the electronics.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: A consumer-grade sibling of the Smart-UPS at a third of the price, and the difference is where it matters: 900 W against 1000 W, and a much shorter warranty on the electronics. It does produce a true sine wave, which is the specification that separates it from the cheaper Back-UPS models and makes it safe for a PFC power supply. Ten outlets, but only five are battery backed -- the other five are surge only, and putting a server in the wrong half is a mistake you find during an outage.

Who should buy this

Workstations and small NAS units that need sine wave backup without a rack-grade unit.

Who should avoid this

Server closets, where the shorter warranty and lighter build are a poor trade.

Key strengths

  • True sine wave at a consumer price
  • Ten outlets with two USB charging ports
  • LCD panel showing load and estimated runtime

Limitations

  • Only five of the ten outlets are battery backed
  • 900 W limit, below the 1000 W of the Smart-UPS
  • Shorter warranty than the Smart-UPS line

Listing was accurate, which is rarer than it should be

True sine wave at a consumer price. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Ten outlets with two USB charging ports. Nothing has surprised me in a couple of weeks.

Not the product’s fault, but be warned

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Server closets, where the shorter warranty and lighter build are a poor trade. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Read the fit note, and it was me

The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Workstations and small NAS units that need sine wave backup without a rack-grade unit. On that basis it has been the right call. True sine wave at a consumer price.

    Specs match the listing

I compared four of these on paper before ordering, so the line I actually checked was "Output waveform". The page says True sine wave, and that is what turned up. Ten outlets with two USB charging ports.

Happy with it, but go in informed

True sine wave at a consumer price. The one thing to know before ordering: Only five of the ten outlets are battery backed. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.
