Managed PoE switch. Port count: 16 x Gigabit Ethernet, 8 with PoE+.

Direct answer: is the Ubiquiti UniFi Switch Lite 16 PoE right for you?

Sixteen gigabit ports, but only eight deliver PoE and they share a 45 W budget between them -- that is the number that decides whether this switch fits, not the port count.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: Sixteen gigabit ports, but only eight deliver PoE and they share a 45 W budget between them -- that is the number that decides whether this switch fits, not the port count. Eight Wi-Fi 6 access points at roughly 9 W each fill 45 W with almost nothing spare, so adding a PoE camera to the same switch will not work. Fanless and silent, which matters because a switch this size usually ends up in a closet or under a desk rather than in a rack with airflow.

Who should buy this

A small office running up to eight access points that wants one silent switch and the UniFi controller.

Who should avoid this

Anyone powering cameras or door controllers as well, who needs a larger PoE budget rather than more ports.

Key strengths

  • Fanless, so it can sit in an occupied room
  • Layer 2 management and per-port statistics in the UniFi controller
  • Sixteen gigabit ports at a price close to unmanaged switches

Limitations

  • 45 W of PoE shared across eight ports -- the practical limit is eight access points
  • Only eight of the sixteen ports carry PoE at all
  • No SFP uplink, so the switch cannot be fibre-linked to a core

Does the one thing I bought it for

Fanless, so it can sit in an occupied room. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Layer 2 management and per-port statistics in the UniFi controller. Nothing has surprised me in three months.

Happy with it, but go in informed

Fanless, so it can sit in an occupied room. The one thing to know before ordering: 45 W of PoE shared across eight ports — the practical limit is eight access points. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

    Wrong product for my situation

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone powering cameras or door controllers as well, who needs a larger PoE budget rather than more ports. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.
