Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: 4K at 30 Hz is the number to know before buying, and it is not on the front of the box. At 30 Hz a mouse pointer visibly stutters, which people notice within an hour and blame on the laptop. The cause is bandwidth: this hub gives one DisplayPort lane pair to video and the other to data, and 4K60 needs both. If you want 4K60 you need a hub that says so explicitly.
Who should buy this
Anyone needing many ports at 1080p or 1440p, or 4K where refresh rate does not matter.
Who should avoid this
Anyone driving a 4K monitor for daily work -- 30 Hz pointer stutter is genuinely unpleasant.
Key strengths
- Eight ports including gigabit Ethernet and both card formats
- 85 W passthrough, enough for most 14 and 15 inch laptops
- 10 Gbps on three of the data ports, not the usual 5
Limitations
- 4K video is limited to 30 Hz, which stutters visibly
- Requires DisplayPort Alt Mode, which many budget laptops lack
- Runs warm enough to notice

Happy with it, but go in informed
Eight ports including gigabit Ethernet and both card formats. The one thing to know before ordering: 4K video is limited to 30 Hz, which stutters visibly. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

Listing was accurate, which is rarer than it should be
Eight ports including gigabit Ethernet and both card formats. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: 85 W passthrough, enough for most 14 and 15 inch laptops. Nothing has surprised me in three months.

My mistake, but read the avoid note
Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone driving a 4K monitor for daily work — 30 Hz pointer stutter is genuinely unpleasant. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.
