Front dash camera, 1440p. Supercapacitor, not a lithium battery. This is the specification that decides whether a dash cam survives an Indian summer

Direct answer: is the VIOFO A119 V3 2560x1440P Quad HD Car Dash Camera right for you?

Supercapacitor rather than lithium battery is the single specification that decides whether a dash cam survives here, and it is why cheap cameras die within one Indian summer -- a lithium cell in a parked car swells and fails, a supercapacitor does not.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: Supercapacitor rather than lithium battery is the single specification that decides whether a dash cam survives here, and it is why cheap cameras die within one Indian summer -- a lithium cell in a parked car swells and fails, a supercapacitor does not. The other purchase people get wrong is the card: dash cams write continuously in a loop, and a standard microSD fails within months where a high-endurance card is built for it.

Who should buy this

Anyone leaving a camera in a car through Indian summer heat.

Who should avoid this

Anyone planning to use a standard microSD card -- it will fail within months.

Key strengths

  • Supercapacitor survives parked-car temperatures that kill lithium cells
  • Sony STARVIS sensor gives genuinely readable night-time plates
  • 1440p rather than 1080p, which is the difference on a number plate

Limitations

  • Requires a high-endurance microSD, sold separately
  • Parking mode needs hardwiring to the fuse box
  • Front only -- the rear camera is a separate purchase

Why high endurance
Dash cams write continuously in a loop. A standard card fails within months; a high-endurance card is designed for it
Why that matters more than anything else
A lithium battery in a car parked in Indian summer swells, degrades and eventually fails, which is why cheap dash cams die within a season. A supercapacitor tolerates high temperature and is why this one does not

Right product for the right person

The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Anyone leaving a camera in a car through Indian summer heat. On that basis it has been the right call. Supercapacitor survives parked-car temperatures that kill lithium cells.

Posting after real use, not unboxing

Had this a couple of weeks now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Sony STARVIS sensor gives genuinely readable night-time plates. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Requires a high-endurance microSD, sold separately. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

  • 3 out of 5 stars, in a sample review of VIOFO A119 V3 2560x1440P Quad HD Car Dash Camera

Three stars, and here is exactly why

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Requires a high-endurance microSD, sold separately. Parking mode needs hardwiring to the fuse box. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: Supercapacitor survives parked-car temperatures that kill lithium cells. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.
