Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: The engine limits are the numbers to check against your own car: 6 litres petrol but only 3 litres diesel, because diesel engines need substantially more cranking current. Reverse polarity protection is what separates a proper unit from a cheap one, since clamping backwards without it destroys vehicle electronics. Being lithium, it should not be stored in the car through an Indian summer.

Who should buy this

Anyone with a petrol car up to 6 litres or a diesel up to 3, who will store it indoors.

Who should avoid this

Anyone with a larger diesel, and anyone who would leave it in a hot car all summer.

Key strengths

  • Reverse polarity protection, which prevents the classic expensive mistake
  • About 20 jump starts per charge, and holds charge up to a year
  • Doubles as a USB power bank and torch

Limitations

  • Diesel limit is 3 litres, half the petrol figure
  • Lithium, so it should not be stored in a hot car
  • 1000 A is a peak figure, not sustained output

Not the product’s fault, but be warned

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone with a larger diesel, and anyone who would leave it in a hot car all summer. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Happy with it, but go in informed

Reverse polarity protection, which prevents the classic expensive mistake. The one thing to know before ordering: Diesel limit is 3 litres, half the petrol figure. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

  • 5 out of 5 stars, in a sample review of NOCO Boost Plus GB40 1000A 12V UltraSafe Lithium Jump Starter

Listing was accurate, which is rarer than it should be

Reverse polarity protection, which prevents the classic expensive mistake. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: About 20 jump starts per charge, and holds charge up to a year. Nothing has surprised me in three months.
