Direct answer: is the Sony Bravia 55-inch XR Series 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV (XR-55A80L) right for you?
The brightness figures need reading carefully: about 750 nits on a 10 percent window and roughly 200 nits sustained full screen, which is how OLED works and why it is spectacular in a dark room and merely good in a bright one.

Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: The brightness figures need reading carefully: about 750 nits on a 10 percent window and roughly 200 nits sustained full screen, which is how OLED works and why it is spectacular in a dark room and merely good in a bright one. Perfect blacks and 120 Hz native make it the better panel for film and gaming both. Burn-in from static logos remains a real if mitigated risk over thousands of hours.

Happy with it, but go in informed
Self-emissive OLED, so blacks are genuinely black rather than dark grey. The one thing to know before ordering: About 200 nits sustained full screen — bright rooms wash it out. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

Wrong product for my situation
Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone with a very bright room, or who leaves a news channel with a static logo on all day. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Does the one thing I bought it for
Self-emissive OLED, so blacks are genuinely black rather than dark grey. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: 120 Hz native with HDMI 2.1, 4K120 and VRR for gaming. No regrets after three months.
