Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: Tool only. No battery, no charger, no case -- an M18 battery and charger add roughly $150 if this is the first M18 tool in the shop. 1,200 in-lb of torque and a brushless motor put it a class above the entry drills, and the autostop clutch is the feature that matters: it senses bind-up and cuts power before the tool twists your wrist. It is heavy at 4.4 lb bare, which is the cost of that torque and is felt overhead within a few minutes.

Who should buy this

Trades already on M18 who need masonry capability and high torque.

Who should avoid this

First-time buyers with no M18 batteries, and anyone working overhead for long stretches.

Key strengths

  • 1,200 in-lb of torque from a brushless motor
  • AUTOSTOP control senses bind-up and cuts power
  • All-metal ratcheting chuck

Limitations

  • Tool only -- battery and charger are extra
  • 4.4 lb bare, heavy for overhead work
  • Costs twice an entry drill kit before a battery is added

Be ready for one thing — Tool only

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Tool only — battery and charger are extra. 4.4 lb bare, heavy for overhead work. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: 1,200 in-lb of torque from a brushless motor. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

Happy with it, but go in informed

1,200 in-lb of torque from a brushless motor. The one thing to know before ordering: Tool only — battery and charger are extra. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

Does the one thing I bought it for

1,200 in-lb of torque from a brushless motor. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: AUTOSTOP control senses bind-up and cuts power. No regrets after about a month.

My mistake, but read the avoid note

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: First-time buyers with no M18 batteries, and anyone working overhead for long stretches. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

    Checked the motor type claim

I compared four of these on paper before ordering, so the line I actually checked was "Motor type". The page says Brushless POWERSTATE, and that is what turned up. AUTOSTOP control senses bind-up and cuts power.
