Direct answer: is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (Iron/Fuchsia) right for you?
Regulating air temperature 40 times a second is the genuine engineering claim here, and it addresses the actual mechanism of heat damage -- structural harm comes from temperature spikes, not from drying as such.

Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: Regulating air temperature 40 times a second is the genuine engineering claim here, and it addresses the actual mechanism of heat damage -- structural harm comes from temperature spikes, not from drying as such. The handle-mounted motor changes the balance rather than the weight. Confirm the voltage variant before buying: a 1600 W heating element cannot be run through any adapter.
Who should buy this
Anyone who heat-styles frequently and wants temperature regulation rather than raw power.
Who should avoid this
Anyone who dries their hair occasionally -- the price is not recoverable in that use.
Key strengths
- Measures and regulates air temperature 40 times a second
- Handle-mounted motor changes the balance in the hand
- Motor tuned to a frequency outside the most audible range
Limitations
- Voltage specific -- the 230 V Indian variant must be confirmed
- Magnetic attachments get genuinely hot to handle
- Costs many times a competent conventional dryer
Technical specifications
- Type
- Digital motor hair dryer
- Brand
- Dyson
- Motor
- Dyson digital V9, about 110,000 rpm, mounted in the handle rather than the head
- Noise
- About 79 dB, with the motor tuned to a frequency outside the most audible range
- Power
- 1600 W
- Volume
- Not applicable
- Warranty
- 1 Year Official Brand Warranty
- Fragrance
- Not applicable
- Model SKU
- 388780-01
- Attachments
- Magnetic, and they get hot
- Key actives
- Not applicable
- Heat control
- Measures air temperature 40 times a second and regulates to prevent exceeding a set limit
- Mains voltage
- Voltage specific. Dyson sells a 220-240 V model in India and a 110-120 V model in North America; a 1600 W heating element cannot be run through an adapter
- Why that matters
- Extreme heat is what causes structural hair damage. Regulation, not lower power, is how this reduces it
- Why handle-mounted
- It moves the mass to the handle, which is why it balances differently from a conventional dryer despite similar weight
- Period after opening
- Not applicable

Does the one thing I bought it for
Measures and regulates air temperature 40 times a second. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Handle-mounted motor changes the balance in the hand. Been using it now for most of a year.

Wrong product for my situation
Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone who dries their hair occasionally — the price is not recoverable in that use. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Good, with one thing to plan for
Measures and regulates air temperature 40 times a second. The one thing to know before ordering: Voltage specific — the 230 V Indian variant must be confirmed. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.
