Direct answer: is the Canon EOS 1500D 24.1MP DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm Lens right for you?
The sensor is genuinely good and the autofocus genuinely is not: 9 points with a single cross-type is a decade-old system, and it is what you notice first on anything moving.

Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: The sensor is genuinely good and the autofocus genuinely is not: 9 points with a single cross-type is a decade-old system, and it is what you notice first on anything moving. The kit lens has no stabilisation either, which matters more at this level than the megapixel count. Its real asset is the EF mount -- the used lens market for it is enormous and cheap, and a better lens transforms this body.

Right product for the right person
The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Beginners who will buy a better lens and shoot mostly static subjects. On that basis it has been the right call. 24.1 MP APS-C sensor is genuinely capable for the price.

Does the one thing I bought it for
24.1 MP APS-C sensor is genuinely capable for the price. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: EF-S mount opens a very large and cheap used lens market. No regrets after three months.

My mistake, but read the avoid note
Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone photographing sport or wildlife, and anyone who needs 4K video. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

Fine, once I adjusted my expectations
Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: 9-point autofocus with one cross-type is dated and struggles on movement. 1080p30 video only, no 4K. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: 24.1 MP APS-C sensor is genuinely capable for the price. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

Happy with it, but go in informed
24.1 MP APS-C sensor is genuinely capable for the price. The one thing to know before ordering: 9-point autofocus with one cross-type is dated and struggles on movement. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.
