Direct answer: is the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones (WH1000XM5/B) right for you?
Best-in-class noise cancellation and LDAC support are both genuine, and the thing that most often surprises buyers is neither: the XM5 does not fold, where the XM4 did, so the case is substantially larger and less bag-friendly.

Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: Best-in-class noise cancellation and LDAC support are both genuine, and the thing that most often surprises buyers is neither: the XM5 does not fold, where the XM4 did, so the case is substantially larger and less bag-friendly. Worth weighing if these travel with you. As with all ANC, the strength is steady low-frequency noise; a colleague talking two metres away still gets through.

Fine, once I adjusted my expectations
Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Does not fold flat, unlike the XM4, so the case is large. No water resistance rating. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: Class-leading noise cancellation on engine and traffic noise. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

Read the fit note, and it was me
The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Frequent flyers and commuters wanting the strongest ANC available, with LDAC for Android. On that basis it has been the right call. Class-leading noise cancellation on engine and traffic noise.

After a few months
Had this six weeks now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. LDAC support, so Android high-resolution streaming is genuinely used. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Does not fold flat, unlike the XM4, so the case is large. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.
