Direct answer: is the Purina Layena Layer Crumbles Poultry Feed, 50 lb right for you?

Editorial verdict
Grounded in published specifications
Summary verdict: 16 per cent protein with 4 per cent calcium is the specification that makes this a layer feed rather than a grower -- that calcium builds shell, and feeding it to birds not yet laying damages their kidneys. A 50 lb bag feeds about a dozen hens for roughly three weeks at a quarter pound a bird a day. It is a complete feed, so scratch grains and kitchen scraps dilute it: past about 10 per cent of intake they measurably thin the shells this is formulated to build.
Who should buy this
Backyard and small flocks of laying hens 18 weeks and older.
Who should avoid this
Chicks, pullets under 18 weeks and mixed flocks with non-laying birds.

Happy with it, but go in informed
16 per cent protein with 4 per cent calcium for shell strength. The one thing to know before ordering: Harmful to birds not yet laying, because of the calcium. To be fair that is written on the product page. I skimmed past it and had to rearrange things afterwards.

Specs match the listing
I compared four of these on paper before ordering, so the line I actually checked was "Crude fat". The page says 2.5 per cent minimum, and that is what turned up. Complete feed needing no supplement.

Posting after real use, not unboxing
Had this two months now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Complete feed needing no supplement. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Harmful to birds not yet laying, because of the calcium. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

My mistake, but read the avoid note
Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Chicks, pullets under 18 weeks and mixed flocks with non-laying birds. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.
