Direct answer: is the DuMOR Chick Starter/Grower 20% Feed, 50 lb right for you?

20 per cent protein and about 1 per cent calcium is the opposite specification to layer feed, and the low calcium is the important half -- growing birds cannot excrete the excess a layer ration carries.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: 20 per cent protein and about 1 per cent calcium is the opposite specification to layer feed, and the low calcium is the important half -- growing birds cannot excrete the excess a layer ration carries. It feeds from day one to about 18 weeks, at which point the birds move to a layer ration as they start to lay. This is the unmedicated version; the medicated one contains amprolium for coccidiosis and the two are not interchangeable if the chicks were vaccinated.

Who should buy this

Chicks and growing pullets from hatch to about 18 weeks.

Who should avoid this

Laying hens, who need the calcium this deliberately withholds.

Key strengths

  • 20 per cent protein for growth from day one
  • Low calcium, correct for birds not yet laying
  • Crumble size suited to chicks

Limitations

  • Not a layer feed -- hens on it will lay thin-shelled eggs
  • Unmedicated, so it does not protect against coccidiosis
  • Must be changed at about 18 weeks

    After a few months

Had this two months now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Low calcium, correct for birds not yet laying. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Not a layer feed — hens on it will lay thin-shelled eggs. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.

Be ready for one thing — Not a layer feed

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Not a layer feed — hens on it will lay thin-shelled eggs. Unmedicated, so it does not protect against coccidiosis. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: 20 per cent protein for growth from day one. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

Listing was accurate, which is rarer than it should be

20 per cent protein for growth from day one. That was the whole reason I picked this over the cheaper options, and it is exactly as described. Also worth mentioning: Low calcium, correct for birds not yet laying. No regrets after three months.
