Motion and ambient light sensor on Zigbee 3.0. Hub required: Yes. Local control: Yes.

Direct answer: is the Aqara Zigbee Motion & Light Sensor P1 (MS-S02) right for you?

The configurable detection interval is what separates this from cheaper PIR sensors: most are locked to roughly a minute of cooldown, which makes them useless for lighting a corridor you walk back down thirty seconds later.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: The configurable detection interval is what separates this from cheaper PIR sensors: most are locked to roughly a minute of cooldown, which makes them useless for lighting a corridor you walk back down thirty seconds later. Setting it to one second costs battery life but makes motion lighting actually behave. The built-in lux reading is the other half -- it lets an automation skip the light entirely when the room is already bright.

Who should buy this

Anyone running a Zigbee hub who wants motion-triggered lighting that does not fire in daylight.

Who should avoid this

Anyone without a Zigbee hub, and anyone needing outdoor placement -- this is IP20.

Key strengths

  • Detection interval configurable down to 1 second, unlike most PIR sensors
  • Built-in lux sensor lets automations skip the light when the room is already bright
  • Up to five years on one CR2450

Limitations

  • Requires a Zigbee hub -- no standalone use
  • IP20, so no balcony, porch or bathroom placement
  • A one-second detection interval cuts battery life substantially

Be ready for one thing — Requires a Zigbee hub

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Requires a Zigbee hub — no standalone use. IP20, so no balcony, porch or bathroom placement. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: Detection interval configurable down to 1 second, unlike most PIR sensors. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

Read the fit note, and it was me

The page describes who this is for, and it described me: Anyone running a Zigbee hub who wants motion-triggered lighting that does not fire in daylight. On that basis it has been the right call. Detection interval configurable down to 1 second, unlike most PIR sensors.

Posting after real use, not unboxing

Had this two months now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Built-in lux sensor lets automations skip the light when the room is already bright. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Requires a Zigbee hub — no standalone use. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.
