Direct answer: is the Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) Smart Speaker with Alexa (B09B8V1LZ3) right for you?

A capable Alexa endpoint with one specification people assume and do not get: it is a Matter controller but not a Thread border router, so Matter-over-Thread sensors still need one elsewhere in the house.

Editorial verdict

Grounded in published specifications

Summary verdict: A capable Alexa endpoint with one specification people assume and do not get: it is a Matter controller but not a Thread border router, so Matter-over-Thread sensors still need one elsewhere in the house. The built-in temperature sensor is the quietly useful part, because it lets a routine switch a fan or air conditioner on the room's actual temperature rather than a schedule.

Who should buy this

Anyone adding Alexa voice control to a second room, or wanting temperature-triggered routines.

Who should avoid this

Anyone who needs a Thread border router, or wants music quality from a single small driver.

Key strengths

  • Built-in temperature sensor enables genuinely useful routines
  • Matter controller, so it commands Matter devices from any brand
  • Handles mixed English and Hindi

Limitations

  • Not a Thread border router, despite being a Matter controller
  • Single 44 mm driver -- fine for speech, thin for music
  • Voice control stops entirely without internet

    Wrong product for my situation

Genuinely my own fault. Posting so somebody else does not repeat it. The listing says who should avoid this: Anyone who needs a Thread border router, or wants music quality from a single small driver. That was my situation and I ordered anyway. It does what it says on the page — it just was not the thing I needed.

    Specs match the listing

I compared four of these on paper before ordering, so the line I actually checked was "Thread border router". The page says No — the 4th generation Echo has one, this does not, and that is what turned up. Built-in temperature sensor enables genuinely useful routines.

Be ready for one thing — Not a Thread border router

Leading with the problem, because it is what I would have wanted to read: Not a Thread border router, despite being a Matter controller. Single 44 mm driver — fine for speech, thin for music. Neither is hidden — both are listed on the page — but they matter more in daily use than they look on a spec sheet. I have kept it, for one reason: Built-in temperature sensor enables genuinely useful routines. That still outweighs the rest, but only just.

    Holding up so far

Had this two months now, so this is not an unboxing opinion. Matter controller, so it commands Matter devices from any brand. Still mildly irritated by one thing: Not a Thread border router, despite being a Matter controller. Known trade-off rather than a fault, though, and I would buy it again.
